Try one of these fun family challenges!
Setting a family challenge can be a fun way for your family to stay active. Choose one challenge – or try all three!
1. Jump to It! Join in this exciting Jump Rope Challenge and report your count each day on Facebook.
2. Get in Step. Clip on a pedometer and see if everyone in your family can get in 10,000 steps a day – that’s about five miles a day!
To start, determine how many steps each family member takes on a typical day. Then set a goal to add in steps until you are at the 10,000 steps a day mark. For example, if you take 2,000 steps on a typical day, try adding 500 steps each week until you reach 10,000.
If you find yourself falling short of your daily goal, be creative about how to add in more steps. For example, you can:
-
Find parking spots a little further out in the parking lot when you’re running errands.
-
Take the stairs instead of elevators.
-
Take an evening family walk.
-
Climb the stairs during TV commercial breaks.
-
Play a fitness video game.
3. Try Something New. Go to your favorite restaurant, and try one of the healthier options on the menu. In many cases, you can check a restaurant’s calorie counts on their website before you go. Or, once you’re at your favorite eatery, look for special menu icons that identify the healthier choices. Who knows -- you just might find a new favorite dish at your favorite place.
